These days, Facebook has become a part of our daily conversation. Those who aren’t on Facebook are met with incredulous looks. Whether you’re fan of Facebook or not, it has fast become ‘the’ social media tool that your business apparently ‘needs’ to be on. But how effective could Facebook actually be for your business? Sure, it costs you nothing but time – but it is worth even that?
In this article we take a look at Facebook statistics for New Zealand. Most of these stats are very recent (March 2010) however a few are from 2009 (I’ll tell you which is which as we go).
Firstly, how does New Zealand compare with the rest of the world?
17th in the world
Yep, New Zealand ranks 17th in the world for the highest number of users per head of population according to the global April 2009 stats. Here are the top 30 countries:

According to Hitwise traffic data from September 2009, Facebook receives the 2nd highest percent of visits in New Zealand after Google and before TradeMe:

Facebooks Ads reports 1,494,600 users are currently registered in New Zealand as of April 2010 (almost 1.5 million).
2009 stats report New Zealanders visit Facebook on average 24 times during 1 month (ie: almost daily).
We spend just under 22 minutes on average on the site per visit.
April 2010 stats report 788,140 females and 618,800 males on Facebook in NZ, so 56% female.
50% of users are aged between 18 and 34, as follows:

April 2010 Facebook Ads estimates place the current average CPC (cost per click) to reach all New Zealanders on Facebook is 35c and the average CPM (cost per thousand impressions) is 15c.
